What happens in Vegas, sadly, doesn't end up staying in Vegas.

A wild night of partying and a pesky impulsive drunken marriage mixed in with a lucky go at the slots result in Cameron Diaz (Joy McNally) and Ashton Kutcher (Jack Fuller) married and three million dollars richer.

A jaded judge R.D Whopper, played by Dennis Miller, who has seen too many marriages fail, makes the pair agree to go to marriage counselling instead of granting divorce and awarding the money.

The rest of the film plays out predictably, but not without some slightly funny high jinks along the way. Scenarios are used which play into gender stereotypes, such as men being physically incapable of putting the toilet seat down and girls being unable to hurry up in the bathroom while getting ready make for average comic fodder.

Kutcher plays up his typecast role as an attractive but hopeless male while trying to annoy and disgust Diaz throughout the film. His character's traits don't go much deeper than that, unless you count Kutcher's attempts at meaningful doe eyed expressions.

Diaz, who is her trademark bubbly self, manages to expand her repertoire by playing the typical woman of today-overburdened and trying to do it all. Maintain the ideal job, nab the perfect husband, and, in Diaz's case, keep her arms in body builder form. In this role, Diaz can't quite reach the romantic comedy queen status like other similarly cast stars Katherine Heigel or Kate Hudson.

Kutcher, although he may have more to offer with a better script, remains Kutcher as a slight variation on Kutcher pre or post-Demi. It would also help if the two had chemistry.

There are moments when the storyline is more than a mediocre comedy routine. Diaz's relationship with her ex boyfriend is something any 20 or 30 something girl can relate to. Kutcher's inability to set his mind to anything for fear of failure and his father's harsh criticism may also ring true for some. But overall, the interactions between Kutcher's friend Hater, played by Rob Corddry, and Diaz's friend, Tipper, played by Lake Bell, provide the majority of the few genuinely funny segments in the film.

If you are craving an average mindless night at the movies, say with a first date, What Happens in Vegas might be the right mix of comedy and poking fun at men and women's idiosyncrasies. But, if you want a film that will have you keeling over in the aisle with laughter and quoting one liners for the next six months then take a pass on this one.

FALL RUNWAY TRENDS 2008
Jenny Sung (Toronto Correspondent - Canada)

Now that the summer is coming to an end (I say this as I choke back tears), it's time for a wardrobe haul!  The fall season may be all too short in our wonderful home and native land, but I think it's long enough to at least go out and invest in a pair of leggings or two.

Speaking of leggings...that is one trend that hasn't seemed to fade so quickly, as it made a repeat appearance on the runways this year.  Of course, since they are for fall/winter, ditch the sheers and go for the heavier, more opaque stockings in any variety of colours and textures (but stick to grays, navys, purples, and blacks - this season's palette).  Paired with an ankle boot, your look is halfway complete...read more
