The Genie's was a dynamic night, with Sarah Polley's first directorial debut Away From Her taking many of the top prizes, whereas the more subtle nuances of Eastern Promises was the award winners of the night. Not too many shocks of the evening, except perhaps Gordon Pinsent winning best actor (who did a wonderful performance in Away From Her) instead of Roy Dupuis winning for portraying Romeo Dallaire. Dupuis won last year, but with so few non-sports related Canadian heroes, it was thought Dupuis playing Dallaire would be a sure win. Madame Tutli-Putli won for best animated short, not a surprise, but a well-earned win. Sharkwater lost out to Radiant City for best documentary; considering the world is in environmental peril, and Robert Stewart has received so much international acclaim for his film (not to mention both beautifully and harrowing filming) this was an unusual turn of events.
