Balaclava Casino Heist is Girl Nobody’s second album of trip-hop-pop stylings. Girl Nobody have been treading the path of music since 1999 and are based out of Vancouver, Canada. You wouldn’t guess these are Canadians though, as Girl Nobody has a distinctly European way of sounding that both pushes the boundaries of music and brings it down to its earthiest levels.

The website for Girl Nobody (www.girlnobody.com) describes them as being one of the ‘few bands that can offer cerebral charm and sexual bravado within a lullaby of pop swoon’ which seems a bountifully accurate quote and sums them up in that ‘nutshell’ we always talk about. Being the second album from this group in their seven years together can indicate procrastination, or more likely -- a thoughtful attention to their craft. I choose to believe the latter as Balaclava Casino Heist is both a gamble and a strong hand played; but in every case a well executed and highly stylized collection worth being considered a solid follow-up album.

Girl Nobody passes the torch over from lead singer Marta Jaciubek-McKeever at times and has other band members singing tracks this time around. In truth, Girl Nobody’s strengths are in their easily identifiable sound and Marta’s unique vocals; best to have strength with strength.

Balaclava Casino Heist is not for every music listeners’ ear, it is for a distinct palate, but for those who see the value in Girl Nobody, they will be richly entertained with an original and layered collection.

GIRLTV

Looking at how teenage girls "really" are...

By: Sarah Rix

Teenage girls rejoice! Seems like television has been built to cater to your every need. From the new 90210 to the Hills to Gossip Girl to Privileged and beyond, there are more than enough shows that aim to please this selective, consumer-driven crowd.

And surely I can't be the only person that's noticed how realistic these shows happen to be; the high school teenagers who look like they're in their mid-twenties, the new wardrobes they have for every single scene, the extensive amount of drama that makes their lives worth watching. Oh yes, that sounds exactly like the remnants of My So Called Life. READ MORE
