Artist: Mohawk Lodge Title: Wildfires Label: White Whale Records Publicity: Killbeat Music Release Date: July 31st 2007 Website: www.mohawklodge.ca 2 ½ Stars Reviewed By: Christopher Williams As far as I can gather, Wildfires is Mohawk Lodge’s second CD released (Rare Birds was their debut). They are a five person indie rock band from Vancouver. In short, their music intends to ‘bridge the gap between Fleetwood Mac and the Constantines,’ according to their promos. I did find for myself their sound seemed stuck in the 90s…before Seattle. The music lacks in originality or even deviation from one song to another. Mohawk Lodge may have crafted a sound, but it isn’t a sound that stands out. The songs seemed repetitive and the ballad ‘Timber’ really seemed repetitive as the words ‘I call timber’ appeared to make up most of the song. I normally like to say something positive and redeeming about a CD or a group if I can’t be favourable in the review because of the music, but truly this was an arduous collection to listen to. It was as if the ‘campfire’ feel they were looking for should have been where Mohawk Lodge left these songs. Sorry guys of Mohawk Lodge, but this probably won’t be the last time you hear this; in fact, you might hear it repeatedly. FALL RUNWAY TRENDS 2008
Jenny Sung (Toronto Correspondent - Canada)
Now that the summer is coming to an end (I say this as I choke back tears), it's time for a wardrobe haul! The fall season may be all too short in our wonderful home and native land, but I think it's long enough to at least go out and invest in a pair of leggings or two. Speaking of leggings...that is one trend that hasn't seemed to fade so quickly, as it made a repeat appearance on the runways this year. Of course, since they are for fall/winter, ditch the sheers and go for the heavier, more opaque stockings in any variety of colours and textures (but stick to grays, navys, purples, and blacks - this season's palette). Paired with an ankle boot, your look is halfway complete...read more |
