We don’t have pets because we have to, we have pets because we want to. Fierce conversations are heated up with ‘I’m a dog lover because…’ and ‘I’m a cat lover because….’ YouTube has a feast of cat, dog, budgie and pot belly pig clips of interest (finally we can all display how cute our pets are for the world to see!). Well now we can communicate with our pets like everyone else, as we have animal interpreters (I used to call them Dr. Doolittle) and we have Reiki Healing for Pets now, just ask the author of such books Margrit Coates. You see Coates, in a collaborative effort for New World Music has created an easy ‘how to guide’ for crystal and energy healing for your pets compiled into a pamphlet tidily tucked into the Mind Body and Soul Series CD case. Music is added by composer Perry Wood which is meant to sooth and stimulate your pooch or puss.

The vibrations of crystals and vibrations of sound are meant to be a communicative process between your animal, you and healing in general. The CD has three songs, but they are of substantial length as the first runs about half an hour, the second is about fifteen minutes and the third is close to eighteen.

An animal lover since long ago, I had a test patient handy to try the music on. She was sleeping, curled up and comatosed as she does, while I slipped the musical collection into my CD player a little louder then usual. She seemed mildly unaffected by the music until the second song came on, at which point she started making whimpering noises and her stomach was pumping up and down with each whinny sound. I know this to be my animals ‘chasing squirrels dream,’ where she is so in-depth in dreams she cannot control her natural urges and is REM-ming her way through an advanced chase. That to me was sufficient evidence enough to feel that the Music For Pets was a benefit to my animal at least.

On a purely music level, as this is a music review after all! I, being a mere human, thought the music was delightful. Mostly ethereal background synthesizer and gentle piano playing at the forefront, Music For Pets was heard and enjoyed by both human and pet! The music sounds best fitted to a film background, almost reminiscent of the soundtrack to Indecent Proposal (Demi Moore, Robert Redford). Although that film was unmemorable, the soundtrack should be in every music lover’s collection. That said, if you can’t get the soundtrack, you might enjoy this gentle and flowing collection immensely. Both you and your pet could meditate to it!
