Title: Hairspray (Soundtrack to the Motion Picture) Artist: Cast of Hairspray Released: 2007 Record Label: New Line Records 4.5 Stars Reviewed By: Breanne Cursley I love the music on this album; there is no easier way to say it. It is upbeat, catchy and I find it rather difficult not to dance along while listening. This soundtrack completely brings home the cheerful and happy vibe that was present in the film Hairspray. J’adore! The battle for my favourite song on the album was between ‘Come So Far (Got So Far To Go)’, sung by Queen Latifah, Zac Efron, Nikki Blonsky and Elijah Kelley, and ‘I Know Where I’ve Been’ sung by Queen Latifah. They’re both so different; ‘Come So Far’ being an upbeat dance tune, and ‘I Know Where I’ve Been’, the only slow ballad in the film. But in the end I would have to pick ‘Come So Far’, because I just love it’s uplifting, catchy lyrics. The wonderful vocals cast in Hairspray really make this album more appealing. Nikki Blonsky, who plays Tracy, (this is her first film) has an energetic and powerful voice, and was the perfect vocalist for the title role. Zac Efron, of the High School Musical film series, is the male lead in the film, and not someone you would expect, to be such a good singer that he is. And, of course, Queen Latifah is fantastic as usual. But there were lots of surprises in the vocal performances as well! Amanda Bynes, Brittany Snow and James Marsden all delivered phenomenal performances. This soundtrack is something I will keep with me for a long time, because I’ve been listening to the songs for a while now, and I’m still not tired of them. I love the happy-go-lucky feeling of the movie, which was transferred completely to the soundtrack. It’s likeable, bubbly, and cheerful – so get up and dance!

Made In Where?
By: Kindah Mardam Bey (Ontario Correspondent - Canada) Recently, the question of where exactly my clothing is made has come to my attention. That little equal sign symbol on the back of Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin's hand represents Fair Trade. Which ultimately means that wealthier countries do not bleed third world countries for cheap labour. Seriously, it's a big problem, and while my brief encounter with awareness hit me in the early 1990s with Nike, and then with the outrageous brush with humiliation Kathy Lee Gifford was subjected to (wasn't everyone else doing the same as KLG?), I had little experience with the subject matter. Then the idea of Fair Trade slid slowly into my psyche, and when your High School school-bag toting cousin is more savvy on the subject then you, it's time to strip off and read the damn labels...Read More |
