Artist: Nathan Lawr and the Minotaurs Title: A Sea Of Tiny Lights Record Label: Minotaur Music/Canadian Arts Council, Saved By Radio Publicity: Killbeat Music www.killbeatmusic.com Release Date: October 2nd 2007 Website: www.nathanlawr.com 3 Stars Reviewed By: Christopher Williams Nathan Lawr seems to be an urban legend on some degree on the Toronto music scene; he seems everywhere at times and nowhere all at once. He has been the guy at the back of the stage playing drums for countless bands such as FemBots and The Constantines, but has moved centre stage with his own collection of songs and musical style. A Sea Of Tiny Lights is Lawr’s third CD offered up for favour. Typical to knowing everyone in the Toronto music scene, Lawr has managed to have a plethora of quasi-known home-grown talent add their contributions to A Sea Of Tiny Lights. Nathan Lawr and The Minotaurs manages to draw together a collection of songs from all different musical genres; such as horn centered Jazz pieces such as ‘Footsteps’ to more folk-rock induced tracks like ‘Swimming Like A Needle In A Haystack Of The Sea.’ The CD does sound like a mish-mash of styles at times, but for the most part it is Lawr’s voice that acts as a constant, which is gentle and laid-back. I wouldn’t say A Sea Of Tiny Lights is a ‘breakout’ CD, but simply another step on a musical path. If you have managed to find Nathan Lawr prior to A Sea Of Tiny Lights and enjoy him, you will continue to do so with his newest inspiration. Made In Where?
By: Kindah Mardam Bey (Ontario Correspondent - Canada) Recently, the question of where exactly my clothing is made has come to my attention. That little equal sign symbol on the back of Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin's hand represents Fair Trade. Which ultimately means that wealthier countries do not bleed third world countries for cheap labour. Seriously, it's a big problem, and while my brief encounter with awareness hit me in the early 1990s with Nike, and then with the outrageous brush with humiliation Kathy Lee Gifford was subjected to (wasn't everyone else doing the same as KLG?), I had little experience with the subject matter. Then the idea of Fair Trade slid slowly into my psyche, and when your High School school-bag toting cousin is more savvy on the subject then you, it's time to strip off and read the damn labels...Read More |
