Spiral Beach, a Toronto based band reveals their newest unsubtle nuances in the second album from this club-kid type band called Ball. A great combination of styles Spiral Beach is easy to sum up; they sound like Transylvanian techno Blondie. Yes, this is a somewhat unchartered territory for music, but pleasantly surprising to enjoy. The songs are fun, funky, 60s psychedelic with some rockin’ beach songs thrown in for good measure.

Ball would be seriously pleasurable music for a house party, beach party, or in a nightclub. Spiral Beach music is dancing music, so dig the most stiletto-glitter-laden-shoes you own (I know you have a pair!) from the back corner of your closet and gleefully dance along to this collection of songs.

Right out of the box ‘Teddy Black’ is unforgettable, catchy and easy to listen to. Maddy Wilde takes the lead vocals on ‘Teddy Black’ and does sound like Blondie, with the same bored, popular girl, tone as the original, when dishing out the lyrics. Right through to the last track ‘Man Moon’ the songs are belting and delicious to the ears. To finish off the experience ‘Man Moon’ is pithy and sardonic with a little Oasis lilt in for good measure.

What is possibly the most mind blowing about Spiral Beach is that they look about twelve years old, not even out of Junior High one would think, but then they have an advanced, intelligent grasp of what good, and fun music can sound like. It is the upbeat nature that makes Spiral Beach pleasant to listen to, but it is the intelligence behind the music that makes them some good old-fashioned camp to indulge in. Spiral Beach is getting some great acclaim for their efforts, which can be downloaded off iTunes if you so desire.

Arts & Politics

By: Kindah Mardam Bey

So we try and keep the worlds of arts and politics separate, like we do church and state, but sometimes the two inevitably intermingle and produce a blaze of fireworks.

A big ticket item this week came hot off the campaign trail when Stephen Harper gave the Liberals the golden egg vote for the arts when he stated that "I think when ordinary working people come home, turn on the TV and see a gala and all sorts of people at a rich gala all subsidized by the taxpayer, claiming their subsidies aren't high enough when they know they have actually gone up, I'm not sure that's something that resonates with ordinary people," he said. "Ordinary people understand we have to live within a budget."READ MORE
