Why
do we become sad? If you feel this question is too broad, sit back and allow
The Olympic Symphonium to musically narrow your answers by providing you with
truth-filled songs in their latest album More
in Sorrow Than in Anger.
In
an eclectic mixture of instruments and feature artists, this east-coast trio
offers lyrical wisdom through apparent life experience and personal struggle.
Through the thick gloom most of the melodies perspire, listeners are still able
to form clear shape of each song’s unique and sincere reflections of reality.
According
to Wolves, Hawks and Kites; “(The Olympic
Symphonium) have crafted a layered and inviting listen that is the sonic
equivalent of wrapping yourself in a warm blanket.” The albums second
track, ‘Intention’s Alone’ is a composition of back-woods country and folk
roots genre. The emotional research intimately presented throughout the album
by band members, Nick Cobham, Kyle Cunjak and Graeme Walker, will leave anyone
feeling far from lonely but perhaps a bit grey.
Other
songs throughout the album set a less charming tone in the nostalgic tracks of ‘Blood
from a stone” and ‘Dead Man’s Inn’. It is in these specific songs the
distressing melodies are matched well with cheerless words.
If
you are looking to re-energize yourself through an upbeat and enthusiastic
sound, I would not suggest tossing on the latest album from The Olympic
Symphonium. However, I would highly recommend playing More in Sorrow Than in Anger, in times where comfort through song
is needed.
