Possibly the best undiscovered gem of the prairies, The Paperbacks have released their second full-length album; and it is full of poetic, timeless sounding songs. The group (Doug Mclean-vocals/guitar, Jaret Mcnabb-bass, Corey Biluk-drums, Andrew Filyk-guitar/vocals, Kevin Adrechuk-guitar/vocals) formed in 2001, but has yet to gain widespread popularity.

Each of their well crafted songs is full of intelligent, moody lyrics, but even though their lyrics are strong and emotional, they don't weigh the songs down. The mood is kept light and thoughtful and is similar to the style of Death Cab for Cutie. These are the type of songs you should listen to when you are giving them your full attention, not only because that is what they deserve, but because then you can appreciate the literary quality of their music and their lyrical exploration.

The clear vocals and unsimplified lyrics make their music very easy and rewarding to listen to. You can feel like you are relaxing while not feeling like you are losing brain cells. These songs are classically modern, and as odd as that sounds, it is the perfect balance. If you enjoy getting something out of listening to music, and despise mindless garbage, then this is the right album for you.

This summer The Paperbacks will be touring across Canada to promote their album before heading back to the studio in the fall. In the meantime, we can look forward to a new double album from them this winter. If you are looking for some quality indie rock music, please listen to The Paperbacks; you will not be disappointed.
