Title: Calling Out

Zachari Smith's debut Calling Out is a rustic sounding album that seems as if it is the beginning of a career in Music. Smith appears new to the music scene, but he has a great energy and persistence that comes across easily. Much of the collection feels as though it is almost, and not quite yet. Nothing is missing in Calling Out except what a little more development, and experience will provide in due course. Smith has talent, it's simply at the early stages where subtleties are generally lost and lyrics are too overt.

Some songs really stuck out to me, one is "Love TV" which is a great satirical song with a catchy and memorable beat to it. The other was "Shine In Your Heart" which was well put together and orchestrated. For much of Calling Out, Smith seems the typical perception of a Western Canadian singer, with his voice and guitar to strum that define him, but these two tracks nestled in seem to be standout gems that reveal Smith's diversity and talent.

I like Smith, he seems determined and probably very willing to travel the arduous road of the music business, while getting consistently more professional and more focused in his personal style along the way. Smith is just at the start of his journey, but he seems up to the challenge, and time will be a great tool in his future development as a singer songwriter.

By: Kindah Mardam Bey (Ontario Correspondent - Canada)

Recently, the question of where exactly my clothing is made has come to my attention. That little equal sign symbol on the back of Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin's hand represents Fair Trade. Which ultimately means that wealthier countries do not bleed third world countries for cheap labour. Seriously, it's a big problem, and while my brief encounter with awareness hit me in the early 1990s with Nike, and then with the outrageous brush with humiliation Kathy Lee Gifford was subjected to (wasn't everyone else doing the same as KLG?), I had little experience with the subject matter. Then the idea of Fair Trade slid slowly into my psyche, and when your High School school-bag toting cousin is more savvy on the subject then you, it's time to strip off and read the damn labels...Read More
