Marianas Trench Interview
Interview by:  Amanda Waschuk
Date:
April 5, 2008

Marianas Trench is a Canadian pop punk band based out of Vancouver, British Columbia.  They are named after the deepest known point in the world, although you can see from the following interview that they like to fabricate stories of where the name came from (in fact, they're known for it!).  Generating their first full-length album "Fix Me" on October 2006, Marianas Trench brought to being the hits "Say Anything", "Shaketramp", and "Decided to Break It".  The creation of their video for "Shaketramp" led to the Juno nomination for Best Music Video.  They are currently working on their second album and were great to meet at the Junos, here's what they had to say...

junosfanfare2008_063.jpgAnEVibe (Amanda Waschuk):  You guys are here for the Juno award weekend, how has it been so far?
Marianas Trench:  It's been great, we rolled in yesterday afternoon.  We went and saw The Cult last night and went to some parties, played some poker but didn't go too hard.

Amanda Waschuk:  Saving it for tomorrow night?
Marianas Trench:  Yeah, and tonight.

Amanda Waschuk:  Other artists that you're looking forward to seeing?
Marianas Trench:  Michael Buble

Amanda Waschuk:  Where does the name Marianas Trench
Marianas Trench: Actually it's a Michael Buble song and it was from an earlier catalogue, and we really liked it.

Amanda Waschuk:  I'm curiuos what's in the goodie bags that all the artists are getting?
Marianas Trench:  There's gum, would you like a stick of gum?  It's Sirius Satellite.  And we got a Sirius Satellite T-shirt.

junosfanfare2008_062.jpgAmanda Waschuk:  Are you going to wear it to the Junos tomorrow night?
Marianas Trench:  I think so.  We need some Sirius Cologne.  I wear perfume though, not cologne.  Why do they always think everyone's a large [T-shirt]?  I'm not a large.

Amanda Waschuk:  I saw a big Gibson tour bus in downtown Calgary.
Marianas Trench:  It's really cool.  We're actually sponsored by Gibson.  It's a big bus that drives all the artists around and we party.  They have a guitar showroom on the bus.

Amanda Waschuk:  Is it Gibson that makes the self-tuning guitar?
Marianas Trench:  It's frickin' amazing.  I would imagine they have it on the bus.

Blog it Out!
kindah_picture.jpgMade In Where?

By: Kindah Mardam Bey (Ontario Correspondent - Canada)

Recently, the question of where exactly my clothing is made has come to my attention. That little equal sign symbol on the back of Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin's hand represents Fair Trade. Which ultimately means that wealthier countries do not bleed third world countries for cheap labour. Seriously, it's a big problem, and while my brief encounter with awareness hit me in the early 1990s with Nike, and then with the outrageous brush with humiliation Kathy Lee Gifford was subjected to (wasn't everyone else doing the same as KLG?), I had little experience with the subject matter. Then the idea of Fair Trade slid slowly into my psyche, and when your High School school-bag toting cousin is more savvy on the subject then you, it's time to strip off and read the damn labels...Read More
