If anything, Oleanna could be required viewing for anyone entering the teaching profession. As anyone who has been through any educational institution knows, it is so simple for one on one student teacher situations to be misrepresented. The reputation of a teacher can be easily warped by the context of a situation and the rumours that proceed. The most interesting part of the play is Mamet's ability to leave the action open to the audience's interpretation. Stereotypes are presented of the insecure female student and the enthusiastic young professor, but beyond this initial setup, the play unfolds and what is right, wrong and evil is open to the judgement of the crowd. |
