Jim Gaffigan is a stand-up comedian
and actor, with credits that include a special on Comedy Central, commercial
spots for Sierra Mist, and a role on the TBS sitcom My
Boys, among many others. His latest CD
and DVD are entitled Beyond the Pale.
Give
Jim Gaffigan some credit…the comedian knows what his audience wants. Minutes
into his set at the historic Alabama Theatre in downtown
The
crowd roared.
It’s
one of his most famous bits, the rant on the frozen meal (snack?) ‘Hot Pockets’,
and he typically ends each bit of commentary on the products’ endless varieties
with the sing-song lyric from its commercials. This night, though, the audience
had to wait for this bit, as it was only delivered in his encore. Not only was
it worth the wait, but the material in between was spot-on.
He
is best at taking a couple of topics and sticking with them…on this night, that
included bowling and bacon. Lots of bacon! Gaffigan absolutely delivered at every turn,
commenting on how tan everyone must think he was after his creepy “Beyond the
Pale” CD cover photo.
He
was relaxed in front of the audience, clearly at home, never faltering for a
line…but, that said, the crowd gave great feedback, music to a comedian’s ears.
All told, Gaffigan gave a great show, consistent with anything you’ve ever seen
or heard from him…he had the audience from the very first word.
