Sweden and music seem to go together like bread and butter; popular acts such as ABBA, The Hives, Peter Bjorn and John have all achieved a degree of success.  Although all acts contribute differently to the music scene, they have one element in common -- all create (or created) very likeable pop music that is (or was) consistent, pleasant and timeless.  As a part of the new music scene, Lykke Li (first name Lykke Li, last name Zachrisson) becomes a new face and a new sound to look out for in the future.  Infusing dream-like sensibilities with head-bopping beats, Lykke puts out a record that is both relaxing, yet completely danceable.  Further, Lykke Li’s distinctive and unique tone created a wonderful listening experience that made me want to play the record over and over again.

One of my early favourites off the album was “Let it Fall”.  Like all of her other tracks, this song combines Lykke Li’s characteristic vocals sung over bouncy dance beats.  And as a mentor, Bjorn (of Peter Bjorn and John fame) clearly became a large influence in the outcome of the album.  The soft pull of Lykke Li’s voice, combined with layers of musical instruments became addictive and intoxicating.  I also enjoyed how the upbeat feeling of the music juxtaposes with the heartbreaking, confessional lyrics:  “In my weakest moments I weep 'cause I like the way tears fit my cheek/in my darkest moments I cry oh how I love the way, tears suits my face”.  She is brutally truthful and does not sugar coat her less than desirable feelings of loneliness and unhappiness.

Yet, my favourite track is definitely “Little Bit”.  Lykke Li sings about being in love, but is unsure if the object of her affection feels the same way.  To appear less vulnerable, she implores that she’s only “a little bit in love with you/but only if you’re a little bit...in love with [her]”.  By being honest and insecure, Lykke Li sings about true feelings and real people.  Willing to do everything for the one she loves, she engages in a frustrating battle between uncertainty and assurance.  Further, by accurately presenting feelings of pride and anxiety, this song was a nice addition to my “Why Does He Not Love Me” playlist.

In a way, the record was comforting; like a large mug of hot tea, listening to the album was calming and relaxing.  And I cannot get enough of Lykke Li’s vocals – indisputably talented and incredibly singular.  She can convey vulnerability and strength in one note, while the lilt in her voice creates an enjoyable atmosphere.  Lykke Li is most definitely a rising star with a bright future and I plan on following her all the way.
